Life, Love and Laughter: August 2011

This year we went to Virginia. The camp we usually go to in Santa Cruz had somes changes this year that led us to look for another camp. Luckily, we found the Heritage and Culture Camp in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The camp was held at Massanetta Springs which is a very nice camp. Boy! the weather was hot. The temperatures were in the upper 90s all weekend and the humidity was around 80%. Reminded us why we live in the Northwest. :) This camp was a lot more structured than the previous camp and had a ton of activities for the kids.

Hannah learned dances, how to speak more Amharic words and about traditional Ethiopian musical instruments like the masinko and the krar. She even made a krar! They also had Ethiopian etiquette classes for the kids and of course, classes on how to cook Ethiopian food.

John and I got to brush up on things like hair care (no, John still can't do more than a puff) and raising a multicultural child and first generation Ethiopian American. We also met lots of new friends.

Despite the heat, this was a fantastic experience and we feel so blessed to be able to provide Hannah the opportunity to learn about her heritage and experience Ethiopian culture first-hand. More importantly, we love the pride in being Ethiopian that camp instills in her. Love ya baby girl and thanks for letting us share this great experience together!
